Today was our third day of serving others in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver BC. On Monday we served food at the Door is Open soup kitchen and on Tuesday we talked to the people at Tenth Church and helped with serving lunch. Today we went to Union Gospel Mission, which is a safe place for people to stay who want to become drug and alcohol free. I learned that after 1 year 80% were still sober and 2 years after 65% of the people were still sober. This is remarkable because thea average is usually 20% after 2 years.
We served lunch to the people there, but the part that I enjoyed most was walking through the streets with Mike. Mike is a man who used to live on the streets but became clean from drugs and started working for UGM 17 years ago. He shared his story with us and showed us the streets of downtown. It was an amazing experience to learn more about the people that live on the streets and the stories he told us were incredible. It taught me to not take things for granted and to appreciate what I have. It also made me realize how important it is to help those in need. So far this week has taught me a lot and has been very rewarding. I can't wait for the rest of the week.
Great thoughts Adri, keep up The good work!!
