Today my group and I went to St. Anthony’s, which is an organization that serves meals to families and individuals that need it. When I was busing trays, I met this man named Charles. The conversation started when he asked me where I was from and if I was with a church. I told him I was with Youth Works and that I was from Washington. He started to tell me about how Jesus is unable to do no evil. He said that he has had many conversations with other volunteers about the same thing, and that when we have a bad day or something bad happens, most think that Jesus is punishing us for something that we have done previously. He told me that the bad things that happen are from doubt and evil. That is when we may start to look to God and then it is fixed. We are always looking for someone else to blame when really, instead of getting angry, we should pray about it.
Another good point that he mentioned was that God never forces anything on anyone. We should not try to force our religion on others. He told me about a group of men who he was talking with earlier. They were trying to start a sort of argument about religion. Charles is Christian and the men were Buddhist, and when they realized that Charles was not going to try to fight them or tell them what is right, they walked away smiling, which is his goal. As he told me this, I started to smile and he said that smiles were his reason for spreading this message. He is on a mission to spread this word and in return he hopes that it will make the world a better place. Even if what I wrote helped out one person, it would be one more person that Charles has reached. The process may be slow but even if it is baby steps at a time we may eventually reach this goal.
