Eyes Opened - Lexie

Today was our second day of service and my eyes have been opened. I met this lady who has been volunteering with The Salvation Army for the last 6 months. Her name was Lia. Lia was our guide who walked around the Tenderloin passing out meals to shut-ins, this program is called Meals That Heal. As we walked around this district, I started asking her questions on how and why she ended working with The Salvation Army. Lia told me about how she loved her job but it wasn’t for her anymore, so she took the steps to quit and find another job later on. After having way too much down time, she decided to step out of her comfort zone and help people. She felt that there was a calling and that she could make a difference. I want to be like Lia one day. She left something that she loved to go and make a difference in a community that needed it. I wish to be like her, someone who just gives and works hard to make change in people’s lives. I never asked about her faith but I know that she has complete faith in God. Who else would be there for her? That is her hope. I hope that one day I can have a relationship with God like Lia does, full trust and knowing that he will always be there for me.
