So we didn't have a chance to write last night. Things were too hectic with check in. We had to unload EVERYTHING from our cars, including trash. They're parked outside and they want no temptation for people passing by at night that are doing anything they can to survive. Once we got set up, we were busy the rest of the evening with choosing groups and having devotions and getting to know each other. Out group, called the "Canucks" is composed of me, Adam, Britney, Emma, Levi and Adri. Today we visited The Door is Open. Basically it is a soup kitchen that is run by the Catholic Church of Vancouver and supported in part by the greater Vancouver Food Bank. In 3 short hours, we provided over 450 meals to men and women of all ages, nationalities and walks of life.
We are sitting, chatting about our day, and here are some of our observations after the first service day:
-Lots of people rely on these services daily.
-Even though some of the people were not showing gratitude, it was fun and enjoyable to serve.
-Some people took the time to personally thank us.
-We saw these "street people" in a different way, more individually, when they came in to eat and we had the chance to serve them.
-We found most of them to be much more cheerful than expected.
Hopefully more from us later (and photos I hope--WiFi is difficult here!)
Tim
