As the mission trip looms ever closer I have been thinking about
pastor’s message last Sunday. How we, as people of the world, become
focused on the ‘now’ of the world and so easily loose our focus on our
ultimate, heavenly goal. I have been thinking about all the things I
will be missing during our trip. My wife. My younger son Lucas. My
daughter Sam and my granddaughter London. My bed. My privacy. My
option to walk away from a stressful situation. My comfort zone.
Giving up the vacation time I so jealously and grudgingly guard. The
time that I could be working on the countless projects around the
house. The relative peace and quiet of my home. Heck, even a well
earned cold beer at the end of a hard day.
But as I have been more in prayer and meditation on the word in
preparation for this trip, I begin to see the long term implications.
First and foremost I have the opportunity to put my faith into action.
Secondly, I get to spend invaluable one-on-one time with my oldest son
Zack. This will be our second trip together and I marvel at Zack’s
ability to quietly immerse himself and embrace the opportunity to
witness. He is a wonderful example of being a simple servant, willing
to do whatever he is asked to do without complaint or question (well,
not too much complaint or question).
I also get the chance to recharge my spiritual batteries. To put
meaningful action behind the pretty words of faith. I also get to
strengthen my connection with my fellow youth leaders Sara, Tim and
Julie, who are great inspirations to me and should be to all of you as
well.
I hope you will follow us on this exciting journey through this
blog. I also hope you will keep us all in your prayers. Most of all,
I pray that you will engage our youth and encourage them in their
walk with our Lord. They are the future of our church, the soon to
be leaders of our faith, and, other than our Triune God, the most
precious and important resource we have.
