"I truly have built new relationships with both the children and staff members at the camp." - Savannah

It's Tuesday night and I have now completed my second day of mentoring basketball camp here in San Diego. Every minute has been greatly enjoyed! This morning I arrived on the site ready for a full day of playing bump, running drills, and scrimmaging. Each day we also have the honor of cooking lunch for all two-hundred kids. Today we served hotdogs and hamburgers. Yum! I have also made a few new friends: Derika, Mileka, De'bora, Jayla, Brittany, and Brianna. Each one has told me about school, members of their family, what they enjoy doing in their free time, and much, much more! This site is certainly a perfect match for me. Not only have I been able to teach the word of God and one of my favorite sports to new people, but I’ve also learned about new, interesting and life-opening stories as well as experiences from them. Although I have only known them for two days, I truly have built new relationships with both the children and staff members at the camp.

Before going on his mission trip, I really didn’t know how many needy children (and adults) there were in San Diego. The kids at the camp are very grateful for our service and incredibly loving and generous. When I walk in to the San Diego City College gym, I’m immediately greeted with a hello, hug or high five. Lunch time is even better. Most all of the kids take the time to talk to and thank us for coming out here to cook their food and help them learn new things. When it comes time to scrimmage I’m always included in their games and conversations. Every child is so welcoming!

As I continue going to my site and helping and meeting even more people, I hope and have great faith that my service will encourage these kids to also reach out to others who need it, and I pray that God will continue to bless these precious people of San Diego. I surely cannot wait for tomorrow!
